Struggling to make those cuts straight? This 3 hour workshop focuses on techniques of cutting both tile and plates. Lots of demonstrations with lots of tools. Lots of guided practice. This workshop is designed to increase your practical and artistic abilities with mosaic, resulting in the creation of more complex, interesting works.

I teach a variety of mosaic classes throughout the year. Please click

I am also available for community workshops, both in and
outside of Edmonton, as well as artist residencies in schools.
Multi Week Classes
All classes are located at the City Arts Centre at 10943-84 Avenue
Mosaic Garden Art (not taught this season)

In this beginner or intermediate course, students will complete 2 projects for the garden or outdoors, one 2D and one 3D. The first class is an information class to help you choose suitable bases for the outdoors, and learn about the techniques to be used.As well, beginners and those intermediate students who want a "refresher" will learn cutting techniques and mosaic basics. The 2nd and 3rd "refresher" will learn cutting techniques and mosaic basics. The 2nd and 3rd classes are classes are devoted to the 2D project, while the 4th and 5th classes are for the 3D project. The last project, while the 4th and 5th classes are for the 3D project. The last class will be devoted to grouting projects.class will be devoted to grouting projects.

Mosaic Tabletops: the Indirect Direct Method
|
|
|
In this intermediate course, participants will mosaic a table top of your choosing, learning the following techniques:
- laying of tile onto temporary backing
- tricks to "upside down" mosaicking
- installing of temporarily mounted mosaic onto the tabletop, producing a flat surface
Students will be required to bring their tables or tabletops to the first and last classes. Please contact me to determine the suitability of the table you wish to use. Table tops chosen must be smaller than 30" by 20". If you prefer to do all your work in class time, I advise you to choose a small table top. A previous mosaic course or other similar experience will be necessary.

3D Glass on Glass Mosaics
|
|
|
In this "glass on glass" mosaic course, participants will learn the techniques associated with glass on glass mosaic work and 3D mosaic work. Beginners and first-time intermediate students will create a four-sided rectangular glass lamp which looks gorgeous when lit up. Returning intermediate students will have a choice of project, either a 2D wall/window hanging or a curved 3D base. Topics to be covered include: designing for glass mosaics, cutting tile, laying tile, and grouting.

Two Evening Workshops
Color Theory for Mosaics (not taught this season)
|
|
|
Learn about the basics of color theory, and in particular, how they apply to mosaics. Learn about color emotions and how they can bring a certain "feel" to your artwork. A comprehensive handout will accompany a lecture and various hands on exercises.

Working with Thinset (not taught this season)
|
|
|
Ever want to try your hand at an ungrouted art mosaic? Ever want to work with textured tile that can't be grouted? Learn all the tricks and techniques of working with thinset adhesive while creating a fine art piece. Suitable for those who want to take their mosaics to a new level. Topics to be covered include: mixing thinset, working with thinset, working with textured materials such as smalti and riven marble, using thinset to sculpt bas-relief, and the eternal question of "to grout or not to grout?"

Deposit is retained due to our commitment to our students. This will help ensure that last minute cancellations will
not cancel the class and therefore disappoint other students. This deposit cannot be applied towards future classes.
In the event that the instructor cancels the class, your deposit is refundable, or may be used as a
deposit towards another class.
Mesh Method for Mosaics (not taught this season)

In this two evening workshop, participants will learn the techniques associated with mosaicking onto mesh, which permits the fabrication of a mosaic in one location and the installation in another. Students must come to the first class with a 6" square design ready to go. In the second class, students will mount their mosaics onto plywood and learn some installation tips for larger projects.

Single Evening Workshops
Introduction to Mosaics
|
|
|
In this beginner course, participants will make a 10" mosaic mirror frame while learning the following basics of mosaic making:
- designing
- cutting
- laying tile
- grouting
Students will take away skills that will enable them to make a mosaic on their own. The first evening is devoted to a general overview of mosaic making, learning cutting techniques and designing their mosaic. The second and third classes are for cutting and gluing tile, and students grout their mosaic in the fourth class.
